Oregon Increases CHild Support Collections

Since the state of Oregon performed so well last year in collecting money for child support they were awarded with a $945, 490 award from the federal government to fund ongoing projects. Oregon Attorney General John Kroger added that he is "very proud of this achievement by our child support team."

A bulk of the money will go to the Oregon Child Support Program to enforce their efforts to collect child support payments from those who have become negligent in making them. While Oregon was passing the requisite tests for all states, including a data reliability audit, three states failed for the last fiscal year. In fact Oregon received a larger amount of support money than they had anticipated, which amounted to $573,000 more than the previous year.

The Program was successful in collecting $336 million in child support for the fiscal year 2009. Several studies have shown the importance of child support payments bringing children out of poverty; most parents make these payments voluntarily.
