Money Troubles Raise Chance of Divorce

It's obvious that money plays a crucial role in a married couple's sense of security and stability, but can it also drive a couple apart?

A new study out of Utah State University has found that tensions over finances can raise the risk of divorce.

In a survey, the study's author, Jeffrey Dew, asked both husbands and wives how often they disagreed with their spouses over chores, relatives, spending time together, and money.

Dew discovered that married couples who fight about money a few times a week have a 30 percent higher chance of getting a divorce, compared to those couples who fight over money only a few times a month.

Having to make financial decisions can put a lot of stress on a marriage, especially when a couple disagrees on important issues such as how much money to put into savings each month, where and when to apply for credit, or how much money should be spent on monthly expenses and other purchases. Situations can become even worse when one spouse has a spending problem or a gambling addiction.
