Youth Leader Charged with Rape

Residents of Salinas were shocked last week when they learned that one of their trusted youth leaders had been charged with statutory rape.

Scott Callan, a former Salinas Police Department officer and current youth leader for the Youth Explorer Program, pleaded no contest to statutory rape on Tuesday. He will serve three years in prison for the two counts of statutory rape of a minor more than 10 years old. The original charges against him, however, were five counts of rape for his sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

The sentencing was delayed until the results of Callan's paternity test were in. The court wanted to make sure that the young girl's child was not his and the test proved that it was not. As a result of his plea bargain Callan will not have to register as a sex offender.

If you're thinking about having a paternity test to prove whether or not you are the father of a child, now is the time to consult with a family lawyer.
