Child Support Cases Double in Coshocton County

According to officials with the Coshocton County Probate and Juvenile Division of the Court of Common Pleas, the number of child support cases has doubled in the past ten years.

There is support for unmarried parents available through the administrative process that is conducted by a hearing officer. Following the hearing recommendations are sent to both parties for medical support and child support, giving them the opportunity to either reject or accept the conditions. If there are no objections then the administrative order is finalized by the court.

In 2010 alone the county had 1,571 out-of-wedlock cases on file. Tonya Lock, administrator of the Coshoctan CSEA, commented that, "Parents who have child out of wedlock, there's a law in place where the mother is already deemed the residential parent of the child". However, if the father wants to pursue custody he must file a motion with the court to obtain it. While 85 percent of children in these situations live with their mothers, more and more fathers are filing to get child custody. Back in 2000 just 257 cases involved unwed parents, while 2010 saw 642 such cases filed in the court system.

If you're looking to obtain child support payments, it is in your best interests to work with a family law attorney.
