Child Support was Used to Purchase Drugs

Child support payments and food stamps may have been used to buy crack cocaine rather than supplies in Wellston. There is now a full-fledged investigation underway to see if and how many people are engaging in fraud to purchase illegal substances in the area. Police Chief G. Thomas Walker states that "it hurts and infuriates me to think it's my tax dollars they're using to buy drugs."

In Missouri, like many other states, food stamps are now accessed by debit cards; child support payments can be added to these cards as well. When Wellston detectives raided one known drug home in the 6400 block of Hobart they found 60 of these cards in addition to six grams of cocaine, fifteen grams of marijuana, guns and knives.

These debit cards do require the use of a pin number to access their funds; however, it appeared that most of the cards had their pin number written onto the back for easy access. In addition to being a big drug bust for the police, they will also know who is using these drug dealers for their services since the cards have names printed on them.
