Oklahoma Considers a New Way for Paying Child Support

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services has a new idea in mind for collecting child support payments.

The DHS wants to set up Kiosks where parents can come to make their child support payments. There are several Kiosks already in place where people can go to make cable and utility payments.  The DHS now wants to add child support as a payment option as well.

Attorney James Williamson says that while the majority of people have child support taken directly out of their paychecks, the kiosks would provide a quick and easy way for everyone else to make their payments.  Williamson said the kiosks would be especially useful for those people who do not have a regular job, and otherwise need cash or a money order to make their payments.

Because only existing kiosks would be used, it wouldn't cost the state any additional money to offer this feature. Rather, the people who use the kiosks for making payments would be charged a small fee, similar to what it costs for a money order.  They'd also be given a receipt to prove they made their payment.

A representative from the DHS said the department hopes to choose a vendor for the kiosks by the end of the year.

Currently there is more than $1 billion in child support owed state-wide.
