Types of Domestic Violence

Many people do not know what to do when they are facing domestic abuse or are too afraid to seek the help they need. There are numerous types of domestic violence, but they can for the most part be categorized into five main types. In each variety of violence, one thing remains the same: the desire to control the victim. Whether through physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, or economic violence, the abuser wants to gain and maintain their authority over their spouse, child, or partner.

Any physical contact that causes pain or injury is classified as physical abuse. From hitting to pushing, choking to kicking, physical violence instills fear and dread in the victim. Not only that, but it can lead to serious injury, permanent disability, and in some cases, death. It could also include withholding certain necessary things from the victim. For example, if the victim was injured in some way, they could deprive them of medical attention. Other reported forms of deprivation include preventing them from sleeping, forcing them to take drugs, or inflicting pain on a loved one. Sexual abuse can be directed towards one's own child or a niece or nephew, or it can be directed at a spouse or partner. Even if the couple has engaged in consensual sexual relations, any forcible sex is still considered rape and it is illegal in every state.

Emotional abuse generally includes humiliation, whether done in public or private. It also includes refusing to let them see other family members or friends and seeking to isolate them by withholding information. Emotional abuse usually includes verbal abuse. Any threats or demeaning words said to the victim is considered abuse. Blaming, name-calling, profanity, and criticisms can leave deep scars on its victims and should not be tolerated. Lastly, economic abuse involves controlling the victim's money and stops them from acquiring any assets, keeping them dependent on the abuser.
