Florida Signs Domestic Partnership Bill

Another victory for domestic partnerships in Florida was signed into law this month in Fort Lauderdale.

Thanks to approval from the City Commission, the city government has agreed to give health coverage to domestic partners of state government employees. Gay rights activists have been working for years to enact this law, and their hard work has paid off. However, this new law extends not just to those in the gay and lesbian community, but also to those in straight partnerships who do not wish to seek marriage.

Of the 1,900 employees currently on the state bankroll, just three to seventy additional dependents are expected to take advantage of the new law. While this is a small financial burden for the state government, it is a huge victory for those who will benefit from it after years of being denied health coverage.
