One Third of Parents Behind on Child Support in Hamilton County

Of the 90,000 parents in Hamilton County who are registered to pay child support, one third of them are behind on their payments.

According to child support enforcement workers some of these parents are poor and, although they do not want to get behind on their arrears, they just don't have the money to make payments. For non-custodial parents, the SmartMoney Community Services program could be the answer. It is a non-profit organization in Over-The -Rhine that provides economic education and low-cost financial planning to those who qualify.

In this case a "non-custodial" parent is the one with which the child spends less time.

If you are a parent in this area then you could receive tutoring on debt reduction, money management, home ownership and credit scores. You can meet individually with financial counselors and enroll in financial literacy workshops. There are even classes that teach parents how to look for jobs.

From 2008 to 2009 alone Hamilton County saw a 200-percent increase in the number of child support cases being paid by unemployment checks rather than paychecks.
