Mississippi Increases Child Support Collections

The state of Mississippi is cutting down on parents that fail to pay by increasing child support payments and employing other tactics to collect child support monies.

When analyzing the amounts collected between fiscal year 2003 and 2011, there was a 61 percent increase. In 2011, the department of Child Support Enforcement collected $314 million, while in 2003 they only collected $195 million. This is surprising considering the decline in the economy since 2003, which has made it difficult for thousands of parents across the country to make their payments.

The difference between 2003 and now is the decrease in penalties and incentive awards. While the department showed high levels of efficiency in 2002, it is estimated that it lost $1.14 million in penalties and incentive awards alone. In addition, the department found that determining paternity and confirming support orders has led to an increase in payments since 2002.

Are you having trouble getting the child support you need and deserve? If so, it may be wise to enlist the services of a family law attorney in your city of residence.
