Parents Fall Behind on Child Support Payments Despite Receiving Funds

While the BP oil spill was a tragedy in itself, it is even worse that some individuals who are receiving money from the company are not putting funds towards unpaid child support payments.

After the oil spill tragedy, the company paid out millions of dollars in claims for damage done. One state is intercepting such payments in an effort to cut down on negligent child support payments. In one case, a man who owed more than $33,000 in unpaid child support found that money intercepted by the Department of Family and Child Services. He isn't the only one, however, as 9,400 parents who are receiving BP funds are also negligent in making their payments.

Altogether, more than $5.5 million is owed by parents who are receiving funds from BP. However, this pales to the $105 million that is owed by parents all across the state. The state has other ways of obtaining unpaid bills, including the collection of casino winnings from deadbeat parents.
