The Divorce Selfie Trend & Why It’s Good

As of August 31, 2015, a Canadian couple's "divorce selfie" snapped at the courthouse had been shared more than 27,000 times on Facebook. The Neumans ended their marriage in August, but in the courthouse pic they were smiling. Who does that?

Mrs. Neuman said, "We're kooky like that," explaining their unusually cheery attitudes outside of divorce court. She said that they're smiling because they did something extraordinary. They respectfully and honorably ended their marriage so they could move forward as parenting partners for the sake of their kids, this way their kids will never have to choose.

More Divorce Selfies Hit Social Media

The Neumans weren't the only ones to celebrate the fact that they managed to have a "good divorce." M. Smith, of St. Paul, Minnesota posted a pic of her and her husband smiling with a caption that read: "I can't believe we did this. #divorceselfie #itsoffical #happyhour," making her one of hundreds who recently posted their "uncoupled" selfie on Facebook or Instagram.

Smith, a 36-year-old mother of two said that they aren't celebrating the fact that their marriage failed, rather they're celebrating the fact they were able to divorce without animosity.

When the Smiths decided to call it quits, Smith was afraid of an expensive, drawn-out divorce that would be stressful for her children, so achieving a friendly outcome with the exes splitting custody 50-50 was a huge relief.

Smith feels that if people could look at the picture and realize that maybe they don't have to hate their ex-husband, than it's for the best.

NYC therapist Rachel Sussman said that while it may sound strange, the trend is a good thing. It is her belief that people are trying to say that though they're getting a divorce, it's not ruining their lives and they don't hate one another. That she says, isn't a bad message.
