Bullying: What Actions You Can Take to Stop It

By Wisselman, Harounian & Associates  Jun. 28, 2011 11:24a

Bullying has once more come into the spotlight. Last year alone, a total of 34 children committed suicide as a direct result of bullying in the U.S. One of the most recent occurrences involved two 14-year-old best friends in Minnesota who planned their suicides together after being tormented by bullies. Their parents wished they had paid closer attention to what was going on in their lives. Even an ABC TV soap opera has climbed on board to bring the subject to more people's awareness by running a storyline on bullying in "One Life to Live."

Following are some actions you can take against this destructive activity:
  • Parents, be aware of any signs that a child is bullying or being bullied and step in to find out what is happening, then take action.
  • Contact school officials if you get information about someone bullying or being bullied, don't be passive and irresponsible.
  • If your child is a victim of bullying, teach him as best as possible to be resilient and not give the bully the pleasure of seeing that he is creating an effect. Find out who is the culprit and take action to get it stopped.
  • Teach your children kindness and respect at an early age.
  • Teach children about morals and responsibility early on and get them to see this applies to internet communications as well.
  • Work together with other parents to help combat the problem.
