Fathers Have Rights Too

By Eric Fredrickson  Oct. 13, 2010 9:34a

Father's rights have been an increasing area of concern over the years. In years past, custody almost always went to the mother in a divorce. Today, the roles of fathers in the home have changed dramatically in comparison to that of the 1950's when the fathers were almost always the breadwinners and the mothers were homemakers. Since the 1960's and 1970's when more and more women entered the workforce, fathers have taken on household duties and shared the responsibility of child rearing. In order for the laws to adapt with the times, father's rights are now being recognized more than ever before.

Consequences

Studies have proven time and time again that a Father's presence in a child's life is very important. Children who grow up without the active presence of their father are at a significantly higher risk to get involved in illicit drugs, abuse alcohol, engage in criminal activity and do poorly in school. Many daughters' who do not have a father figure playing an active role are more inclined to seek approval or acceptance from other male figures, sometimes to their detriment.

Additionally, one of the most prevalent ways a father's rights are violated is through alienation. Attempts to brainwash the children and develop a negative attitude towards the father by the mother succeed in causing confusion, resentment and disdain for the father by the child. This can be one of the most painful, damaging effects of divorce. On the bright side, studies show that when a father is involved in his children's education, they were more likely to enjoy school, get better grades and participate in extracurricular activities.
