Data from the Orange County Sheriff's department shows an increasing trend in the number of domestic violence cases. Statistics from shelters which provide a safe haven to victims and their children show a similar uptrend. Some shelters are so continually full that they have a waiting list in order to accommodate the over 3,000 women and children who seek safety at a shelter from an abusive spouse or other family member. Since 2005, the number of felony and misdemeanor domestic violence cases filed totals nearly 17,000 according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. Whether you were the victim of domestic violence or have been charged with this offense, contact an Orange County divorce attorney to find out what your rights and options are.
Why an increase in domestic violence cases?
Domestic violence experts feel the increase in the number of reported cases may be due to several reasons from increased awareness and economic issues to those involving changes in law enforcement. There are a greater number of women in law enforcement including judges and police officers. Experts also say law enforcement is more receptive and responsive to domestic violence as being an actual social issue. A director of a local shelter thinks that the increased number of available shelters helps victims of violence and abuse in the home more able to take the leap and leave a dangerous situation. This may be especially true in difficult economic times where a victim may feel they have nowhere to go or no other way to live.
