In 2009, 131 people were killed at the hands of a loved one or a family member in North Carolina according to the Attorney General for North Carolina. The majority of these victims were female, with 99 being reported and 32 of those victims were male. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that one out of every three victims of violent crime was attacked by a family member. In the State of North Carolina, domestic violence is defined as:
- An attempt to cause bodily injury
- Intentionally causing bodily injury
- Causing the victim or their family to be in fear of imminent serious bodily injury
- Persistent harassment that rises to the level of stalking that causes severe emotional distress
- Committing any act that falls under the statutes covering sex offenses
In order for a crime to be considered "domestic violence," the victim and the attacker must have a personal relationship. A domestic relationship covers a broad range of interpersonal relationships including:
- Current or former spouses
- People who currently or have lived together
- Parents or children
- Family members
- A couple or former couple that have a child together
- People who are or have been in a dating relationship
