Under Florida law, alimony may be awarded on behalf of one of the spouses in a divorce. Alimony, also known as spousal support or maintenance, may be awarded to a husband or wife, depending on the financial circumstances of the marriage. Many factors will be considered by the courts in deciding the issue of alimony. Such factors may include how long the marriage lasted, what each spouse contributed to the marriage, whether one spouse supported the other through college or a training program, whether one spouse let certificates or higher education lapse in order to take care of children, what the financial resources of each spouse will be after a divorce, and more.
Several types of alimony exist under Florida law. These include rehabilitative alimony,
transitional alimony,
permanent period alimony, lump sum alimony, and temporary alimony. Temporary alimony is awarded while the divorce is pending until the issue is permanently decided through the courts. Rehabilitative alimony helps a spouse restore his or her professional status so as to become employable and self-supporting. Transitional alimony is usually a one-time payment to help a spouse adjust to life as a single person. Permanent period alimony is a monthly maintenance payment usually granted in cases where a couple has been married for a significant time.
