More Divorces for the Over-50 Crowd

The number of divorces among those over 50 has been consistently increasing in the last five decades. According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, in 2011 the percentage of divorced in this age group had risen to 15.4 percent. Compare that percentage to 11.8 percent of this age group divorced in 2000 and only 2.8 percent of the over-50 populace who were divorced fifty years ago. Called "gray divorce," the phenomenon of increasing numbers of couples divorcing in their later years seems here to stay. Divorce rates overall have probably stayed relatively the same except in this age group. A survey of census statistics done by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio showed that the divorce rate in people 50 and older has doubled in this country since 1990.

In 1990, according to the study, one out of every ten people who were divorced was 50 or older. By 2011, that ratio had changed to one out of every four divorced persons being 50 or older. Various reasons for the growing number of divorces in older Americans have been put forth by sociologists and other experts. These reasons include the fact that Americans are living longer and thus have a greater chance for divorce, that women have become more economically independent and thus can afford to divorce and support themselves, and that many couples divorce in their later years after their children have left when no reason exists for them to remain in unsatisfactory marriages.
