Parental Alienation Syndrome

By Ardalan & Associates  May. 16, 2011 11:51a

Nearly fifty percent of all marriages end in divorce, affecting nearly one million children each year in the United States. There is probably no issue that is more volatile and more contested than child custody and visitation. Divorce is rarely easy and when children are involved, emotions can run very high for all parties involved. Although divorce is the dissolution of a marriage, parent’s do not “divorce” their children, however, all too frequently, one parent will run a campaign against the other parent, which in the end, serves to destroy the parent/child relationship with the other parent. If you suspect PAS, contact a San Diego family law attorney for help.

Parental alienation or otherwise called (Hostile Aggressive Parenting) refers to a group of behaviors where a child belittles and insults one parent without justification. This occurs as a combination of factors; however the root of PAS is the indoctrination or “brainwashing” of one parent against the target parent. Parental alienation syndrome (PAS) primarily arises in the context of child-custody disputes, high conflict marriages, separation and divorce. In severe cases, the child believes the alienating parent’s ideas to be their own. In this case the child will say that they do not wish to see their other parent, even if they are told they should do so or it is a court order.

Families Suffer From PAS

Alienating parents mentally manipulate or bully a child into believing that the target parent is the cause of the divorce, the root of their problems, and is someone to be feared, hated, disrespected and avoided. Not only is the target parent the victim of PAS, but the children are as well. PAS deprives children of their right to receive the love and affection from both parents. PAS is far reaching, and its consequences can last a life-time, ruining the parent/child relationship permanently. Many parents aren’t aware of PAS, until they experience it.

Parental alienation syndrome is no laughing matter. The relationship one has with their child is extremely important. If you are the target parent and notice that your child has become alienated from you, there is legal recourse. Contact a parental alienation attorney from Ardalan & Associates for help.
