Domestic Violence at Root of Murder-Suicide

Police in Gilbert believe that domestic violence is to blame for a murder-suicide that took place last week. Although the incident is still under investigation, the sole survivor has spent hours talking with police about the history of the family. According to the police report, a 911 call was placed by 47-year-old L.M., who was dating the shooter, J.T.R. While she was on the phone with the 911 center, there were shots fired and the line went dead. By the time that police arrived on the scene, four people had been shot and the gunman had turned the firearm on himself.

After speaking with the survivor, 19-year-old B.M., police learned that the shooter had been dating her mother for some time. The two had gotten into an argument that got out of control, leading to the deaths of her mother, her sister, her sister's boyfriend and their 15-month-old daughter. Although police thought that the incident might be linked to terrorism, as the shooter was a known border vigilante, it is believed to have stemmed from a domestic violence dispute.
