Wisconsin May Change Current Child Support Laws

State legislators in Wisconsin are discussing the possibility of changing current child support laws. If these changes go into effect, it could have a serious effect on many families. As it stands now, parents that make child support payments can stop when their child turns 18. In very rare cases, a judge will extend the payments for one more year. However, there are no distinctions for children that are disabled. This means that adults who might otherwise need extra support due to their disabilities would no longer receive financial assistance from the non-custodial parent.

There are opponents and proponents of the bill voicing their opinion across the state. While some argue that the proposed changes would greatly help families that experience extra burdens, there are those who say that the government already has a financial system in place for people with disabilities. The proposed changes are up for review at the end of the month. Are you owed past due child support? If so now is the time to consult a family lawyer!
