Indiana Governor to Sign Bill that will Impact Child Support

A bill is coming up the legislative ladder and is likely to be signed by the governor of Indiana soon. Already passed by a state Senate committee, Senate Bill 18 will change child support laws that could affect thousands of families. As it stands now, the law states that parents who are paying child support must continue doing so until the child turns 21. The new law would change this age to 19 and would exempt educational payments. The state is following several others that have already changed such laws to ease the financial burden of those parents that make child support payments.

The Bill was initiated in the Senate Correction, Criminal and Civil Matters Committee and was passed by a vote of 7-2. It will go before the full Senate where, if approved, it can be signed into law by the governor. Are you having trouble making child support payments? If so, now is the right time to get a family lawyer involved in your case.
