Illinois May Change Child Support Calculation

Legislators in Illinois are working on a new calculation that will determine how much to charge for child support payments. This new calculation could change the way that judges allot support payments in the next few years.

An official with the state's Division of Child Support Enforcement spoke about the debate earlier this week. She said that the new calculation would take into account both parent's incomes rather than just looking at a percentage of the non-custodial parent's income. The calculation would be based on overall income and reflect the ability to pay.

For example, if one parent makes 25% of the combined income he/she would pay 25% of the child support. While this idea has gained support already in the state legislator, it has yet to be officially approved. There are many channels that this proposition will have to go through before reaching the final stages of legislative approval.

If you need assistance with a child support matter, it is advised that you hire a family law attorney.
