Young Father Arrested for Failure to Pay

A young man is now spending time behind bars for failing to make child support payments. He is part of a movement to change the laws regarding child support in the state of Georgia. L.H., 24, is a father to a little girl. He spent several years in the military but when he came back in 2009, he had trouble finding work as a civilian. Although he was able to make his child support payments at first, he became irregular and then stopped making payments altogether. L.H. was arrested on the charge of failure to make child support payments and was jailed for four months.

This is not uncommon in Georgia. There have been over 3,500 parents that have been imprisoned since January 2011 for the same problem. Concerned about parents that are in his situation, L.H. has joined four other fathers who have filed suit against the state. They hope to change the state laws to disallow judges from imprisoning people for late payments. Finding it difficult to make your support payments? Enlist the services of a family law attorney as soon as possible so you can prevent legal repercussions, if possible.
