Athens County Children’s Services is reportedly seeing more child custody cases where drugs are a factor. According to reports, 46% of child custody cases last year were related to drugs; prescription pills, meth and several times heroin. It is reported that in 2011, the number of children placed into Children’s Services protective custody after being removed from their home was 42. That same number was already matched by June 2012. Another reported contributing factor is the number of families in the Ohio county below the federal poverty guidelines - roughly 35%.
