Ohio Makes Paying Child Support Easier

A new law in Ohio will make paying child support easier for non-custodial parents without being penalized.

As of October 1st, the new law will allow parents to make at least half of their monthly child support payments without losing their licenses. In the past, parents who were grossly negligent in making their payments could lose their licenses, both professional and driving. Between January 1 and August 31 of 2011 alone, 100, 533 parents had their licenses taken, along with 83 who lost their professional driving licenses.

Of those parents who lost their licenses between September 20110 and August of this year, just 19 percent of the total amount owed by all parents was paid. In an attempt to raise this figure, the Child Support Enforcement Agency is working with the Department of Motor Vehicles to cut down on parents losing their driver's licenses. The agency believes that once people stop being penalized, they might become more likely to make their payments, even if just a portion of them.
