New Child Support Law Passed in Ohio

A new child support law in the state of Ohio has eased up on penalties for parents who are unable to make child support payments. Previously in the state, if a parent owed more than one month of child support they could lose their driver's license and any professional licenses they may hold. The new law, which was amended to the states recently passed budget, makes it so that parents who pay more than half of their child support payments won't have to face suspension of their licenses anymore.

The law was changed to help encourage parents to work instead of punishing them when they are unable to find jobs in this rough economy. An expert in child support has insisted that most parents who miss payments are unable to make their child support payments, not unwilling to do so.

In fact, two thirds of the child support money owed by parents in the state is owed by people who make less than $10,000 per year. By letting parents keep their drivers and professional licenses, the state will better enable struggling parents to work.
