Mother to Serve Jail Time for Failure to Pay

Although they do comprise the majority, men are not always the ones asked to make child support payments. In the case of one mother in Troy, she will now be spending time in jail after becoming thousands of dollars behind on her child support.

The case was heard before the Michigan Supreme Court last week where both sides discussed how and why the woman was unable to make her payments. While it is true that the woman lost her job, a lower court had reduced her monthly payments to just $25. The court decided to confirm the charge of felony nonpayment and place her in jail.

When reviewing the details of this case, the defense attorneys argued that parents who could not make their payments are unfairly convicted. This case should serve to show that parents who cannot pay should not be thrown in jail. However, the judges responded by stating that if that were the case, $9 billion in national child support could be at risk.
