Maine Experiences 6 Domestic Violence Related Deaths

In Maine alone, the past week has seen six deaths related to domestic violence.

As a result, officials have made domestic violence a priority to prevent future fatalities and injuries. Officers in Maine are still investigating the case of a Winslow man who shot his wife in front of their own children, and then ran away before shooting himself. Just one week later a father shot his entire family before shooting himself in Dexter.

As far as the Dexter case goes, it appears as though the community had tried to protect the victim, Amy Lake. A victims' advocate, Lois Galgay Reckitt, commented that her coworkers kept an eye on Lake, as well as local authorities, yet the tragedy still happened.

Now officers are bringing victim advocates with them to any domestic calls they receive. The department hopes that this will not only help victims short-term, but provide them with long-term resources to prevent future attacks.
