Governor LePage Discusses Domestic Abuse

After several domestic violence murders were spotlighted this month in the news, Maine Governor Paul LePage has decided to speak about his experience with abuse as a young boy.

The Governor spoke on his weekly radio address about the abuse he experienced at the hands of his father. Since he was a victim of domestic violence, LePage can intimately relate to the horror and sadness felt by the families of those who were killed last month. A husband in Winslow killed his wife and then shot himself after a police chase; in Dexter, another man shot his two children and wife before killing himself.

Although Maine doesn't have the highest rates of domestic violence, it is among the top in the nation. Looking at statistics for this year alone, 7 out of 13 murder victims had their life taken by a family member or friend. Realizing just how serious the situation is, Gov. LePage is urging domestic violence victims to take charge by reaching out to a friend, family member, hotline or police to get the help they need. Another way victims can seek help is by working alongside a family law attorney.
