City Speaks Out About Possible Denial of Rights to Domestic Partners

One city has come forward to speak out against a new referendum that could be passed in North Carolina that would ban the granting of rights to those in domestic partnerships.

The referendum, which would amend the state constitution in 2012 if passed, would deny same sex marriage in the state. This would affect same sex couples in many ways, including denying them coverage under Durham's city domestic partnership benefits program. Since there is already a state law that bans same sex marriage in the state, those in domestic partnerships have to struggle to gain any rights they can in North Carolina.

If the referendum is passed by three-fifths of the Senate and House, it will go on the 2012 ballot. Since the governor cannot veto proposed amendments to the state constitution, it is important that the referendum never make it to the ballot should the limited rights that same sex couples have be protected.

If you are wondering what rights you are entitled to as part of a same sex couple, you should set up a time to meet with a family law attorney who can offer you insight and clarity.
