New Texas Child Support Program Introduced

On average, Texas collects and redistributes $3 billion per year in child support. Most of this money is obtained through wage garnishments. This is when a portion of a paycheck is withheld to pay off certain debts such as child support.

These payments are then distributed by the state to the custodial parents. There are times, however, when these payments are stopped. This can happen due to a loss of employment or incarceration. In these cases, the state is then forced to go after that person and attempt to collect the money owed. Sometimes the state is successful in collecting lump sum payments that are then given to the custodial parent.

A new program will give parents the option of taking those lump sum payments and placing them into individual accounts. The purpose of these accounts is to save up money for college and will be run by the state.

If you need help obtaining child support, you'll want to work with a family law attorney in your state of residence.
