City of Chicago Helps Domestic Violence Victims

The city of Chicago is battling domestic violence everyday on the Chicago Domestic Violence Help Line, helping men and women who are often fighting for their own lives.

Last year the hotline took in 30,000 calls, at an average of 541 per day. While these numbers may seem high, they actually represent a decrease from the year before in which 29,641 were calls answered. According to the Department of Family and Support Services, domestic violence phone calls to the police decreased as well, but only by 1.3%.

Of these calls, women comprise a whopping 93% of callers. These calls can be broken down even further by category, with 24% asking for legal help and 39% seeking shelter. Of the women, 51% were black, 25% white and 21% Hispanic; the average age of the callers was 34 years old. Many of these callers had children as well, while 6% of the women were pregnant.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, put an end to maltreatment by hiring a family law attorney.
