14 People Scam Child Support System

A woman, just one of the 14 people charged in a scheme to steal money from her state's child support system, was sentenced to two years behind bars this week.

When the woman went before the judge earlier this week, she pleaded guilty to access device fraud and aggravated identity theft. She joins 13 others who worked at Affiliated Computer Services, a company that issued debit cards to those who receive child support in Texas. Together the group devised a way to steal from the $18.2 million contract the state made with their company, ultimately taking from the families who needed that money for child support.

They decided to use the debit cards themselves, or gave them away to family and friends. State prosecutors have uncovered at least $275,000 worth of diverted funds; all of this has already been reimbursed by Xerox, the parent company.

In addition to jail time, a U.S. District Judge also ordered the woman to pay restitution.
